Are custom mouthguards worth it?

Are custom mouthguards worth it?

Mouthguards can help to protect you from serious injuries.

Mouthguards are used to protect the teeth, jaws and soft tissues from injury. Ideal for those who play contact sports, mouthguards are an important addition to one’s kit bag — but is it worth having a custom mouthguard made? Read on to find out more about these dental devices and how they work…

What are custom-made mouthguards?

Custom-made mouthguards are made using an impression made from your teeth. Your dentist will make a mould of your teeth, which will then be sent to a dental laboratory. Because custom-made mouthguards are made for the individual patient, they fit very comfortably and are perfectly suited for the unique structure and shape of your teeth and mouth.

Custom-made mouthguards fit much more accurately than store-bought mouthguards. This means that they are less likely to become dislodged, and they provide excellent protection from injuries that can occur during contact sports.

Why consider a mouthguard?

If you play a contact sport or participate in an activity in which the risk of falling is fairly high, you are likely to benefit from wearing a mouthguard. Mouthguards can protect the teeth from injuries, and can also help to protect the cheeks, lips and tongue.

If you take part in an activity like soccer; skateboarding; rugby; boxing; or hockey, you are an ideal candidate for a custom-made mouthguard. By wearing a mouthguard, you could prevent a range of injuries, including chipped, cracked or knocked out teeth. Mouthguards also protect the gums and other soft tissues in the mouth. You may also reduce the severity of a concussion should you experience a hard knock to the head. This is because they spread out the effect of an impact and absorb part of the force.

How do you take care of your mouthguard?

If you choose to have a custom mouthguard fitted, there are a few things you should keep in mind to maintain it in the long-term. It is advisable that you rinse and clean it before each use. This will ensure that you get rid of any plaque and debris that has built up.

It is important that you store your mouthguard in a strong container in order to prevent damage when you are storing it, or when you travel. Make sure that you avoid placing your mouthguard in hot water or in direct sunlight in order to prevent warping.

If you do notice any damage to your mouthguard, it is important that you discuss your concern with your dentist as soon as possible. In some cases, it may be necessary to have a new mouthguard fitted to ensure optimal protection when you play sport.
