How to take care of dentures

How to take care of dentures

It is important to keep your dentures clean for the sake of your oral health.

If you need to replace missing teeth, dentures may be a suitable solution for you. Dentures are custom-made for a comfortable fit and are designed to look as natural as possible. You must clean your dentures regularly to maintain your oral health and to keep your dentures looking and feeling good in the long term. Read on to find out more about dentures, and what you can do to keep them in tip-top condition…

How often should you clean dentures?

It’s best to brush your dentures twice a day — once when you get up in the morning, and again before you go to bed. As well as brushing them, you should also soak them overnight in a denture cleaning solution or a mild soap.

While it’s important to brush your dentures twice a day, you should also remember to brush and floss any remaining natural teeth that you have, as well as your gums and tongue. This will help to maintain your oral health and keep your breath fresh.

How should you clean dentures?

When you brush your dentures in the morning and evening, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and clean them gently. You don’t need to use any toothpaste most kinds of toothpaste tend to be abrasive and can cause damage to your dentures.

By gently brushing your dentures with a specially-designed toothbrush, you will be able to remove food particles, plaque and bacteria that has accumulated throughout the day. Try and brush all surfaces of your dentures and then rinse them with warm water.

Besides regular brushing, it is also important to soak your dentures every night. When you are ready to go to bed, place your dentures in lukewarm water or a denture solution. This will ensure that they don’t dry out or lose their shape overnight. When you wake up, rinse them before putting them back in your mouth.

Are there any foods to avoid?

In order to maintain the condition of your dentures, there are a few foods that are best avoided. Particularly hard and sticky foods, for example, can cause damage to your dentures. Hard foods that can damage or dislodge your dentures include whole nuts, popcorn, raw carrots and apples. Sticky foods that should be avoided include nut butters and gummy candy — these can get stuck underneath your dentures and cause discomfort and gum irritation.

It is also best to avoid tough cuts of meat as these can exert excessive stress on both your dentures and gums. Too much time spent chewing can also cause pain in the area in which the dentures and gums meet.

Although there are a few foods that can damage your dentures, there are plenty of other options to enjoy. Try and eat a balanced diet that includes fresh fruits and vegetables, soft-cooked meats and seafood; and be sure to remove plaque and food debris from your gums and dentures with regular cleaning.
