Porcelain veneers are thin porcelain shells – no larger than contacts – that are customised to precisely fit each tooth. Veneers typically aim to improve the appearance of tooth cracks, chips, colour, shape, and they can benefit your smile for years. The treatment is minimally invasive, and any discomfort is more often than not tolerable.
Prior to any treatment, you will have a thorough discussion with one of our dental professionals to discuss the results you’re trying to achieve and establish how our dentists can help.
It is important to understand and feel fully informed about the treatment before making any definite decisions. This also includes understanding exactly why you’re wanting to undergo the treatment. Porcelain veneers can bring many benefits to your smile.
Some of these benefits include:
Once both one of our dentists and patient are on the same page, the treatment can begin.
To start the treatment, our dentist will take an impression of your teeth to create a mould of your smile which will be sent to a laboratory. This laboratory is where your veneers will be custom-made to fit your smile and match your desired results, as discussed during your initial consultation. Once our dental team have the prepared porcelain veneers, the patient will come in for their follow-up appointment where the porcelain veneers are then fitted.
This fitting process will involve about one millimetre of the enamel to be shaved down which will allow dental cement and the veneer to adhere discreetly.
Porcelain veneers are fortunately relatively resistant to foods and drinks that would normally stain natural teeth such as tea, coffee, red wine and more. However, this does not mean your veneers are insusceptible. Your porcelain veneers may become damaged if you bite your nails, chew on ice, or grind your teeth.
You must also continue daily oral hygiene routines such as brushing morning and night, as well as flossing. Your veneers and the underlying natural teeth require daily maintenance, as was required before the treatment.
Getting veneers may involve some discomfort, but it should not be painful. Your dentist may use anesthetic to numb the area and may offer sedation options if needed. You may experience some sensitivity after the procedure, but it should subside quickly. Contact your dentist if you experience persistent pain.
Porcelain veneers do not stain due to the non-porous material, but if your natural teeth do not match the shade of your veneers, it could be due to older or darker veneers or darker natural teeth. To maintain bright teeth, avoid staining drinks and care for veneers like natural teeth by brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist regularly.
