Children’s Dentistry

Don’t put off bringing your child to the dentist any longer!

Children’s Dentistry

Dental care should ultimately start early to ensure healthy oral health for life.

Many parents put off bringing their children to the dentist as they don’t want to put up with any fear of the dentist or panic attacks their children may have. If this is a problem for your child, fear not as it is completely natural and normal. However, our team do not recommend putting off dental appointments as this can begin a fear of the dentist.

If a child has not had a recent check-up, make sure to book your appointment to ensure no unwanted problems arise or worsen if they are already present.

What happens during a child’s dental visit?

We offer a wide range of children’s dental services. Some of these include, but are not limited to:

Check-Up & Cleans

At Smile Speciality Dental Group, our dentists recommend bringing your child in for check-ups and cleans every six months. This can ensure any dental concerns or underlying health issues are detected, treated and that your child’s oral health is maintained in the long-term.

During your child’s dental visit, one of our qualified dentists will check the child’s teeth and gums, as well as jaws. Any issues will be thoroughly explained to the parent or guardian, and if treatment is necessary, a customised plan will be established based on your child’s particular needs.

Fissure Sealants

Our team offers fissure sealants which can assist in protecting plaque or mouth bacteria ascending to tooth decay. The procedure itself is quick and typically considered painless and does not require any anaesthetic or invasive forms of surgery.

We recommend that sealants are applied as soon as your child’s permanent teeth come through. You can expect your child’s first set of permanent molars to erupt at around the age of six years old, while their second permanent molars should come in at around before the child hits their teenage years.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride is a natural mineral that can strengthen the enamel which thereby can help prevent tooth decay. When one of our qualified dentists applies fluoride, the treatment is quick and easy, and the procedure does not cause any discomfort to the patient.

Fluoride treatments are particularly helpful for children who are at high risk of tooth decay, so if you are concerned about your child’s oral health, we recommend that you book your appointment or mention this in your next visit. From here, our team can evaluate what further treatments may be required if the fluoride is not enough.

As parents it is your responsibility to use the first dental visit to become well informed about your child’s oral health. Your dentist may discuss the following.

  • Teething
  • Brushing techniques
  • Bite (how your child’s teeth will come together
  • Soft tissues such as gums and cheeks
  • Habits such as thumb sucking
  • Risk of decay and how to prevent it
  • Prevention of trauma to your child’s mouth
  • Nutritional advice

Our dentists have your children’s best interest at heart and want to make sure that good habits are developed early.
