Dental Implants

Missing a tooth? Discover a long-term solution to replacing a missing tooth through a prosthetic device.

Dental implants provide for the missing teeth and have been designed to look and feel and virtually function like any natural teeth, meaning once the treatment has been completed, you can return back to your day-to-day life without the worry of a missing tooth.

What are dental implants?

A dental implant has a titanium “root” that amalgamates directly to the underlying bone and restores the function of the natural tooth. Dental implants at The Smile Speciality Dental Group are made using the highest quality, medical grade titanium.

How is a dental implant placed?

Before any procedure is undertaken, a thorough consultation with one of our principal dentists will be conducted. This will involve an oral examination and an x-ray of the affected area. This will ensure dental implants are the most suitable option for you. This will mean that the procedure will take a total of around three to four visits in our clinic, with the second visit being the placement of your implant. You will be given a local anaesthetic to numb the area and you will have to wait around three months for the wound to heal before the prosthetic tooth is placed over the dental root.

Why should I replace a missing tooth?

This is one of our most commonly asked questions! We’re here to tell you that your teeth play a far more substantial role than just chewing which is why it’s important you replace them when necessary.

You may not realise, but majority of the damage caused by a lost tooth affects the underlying surface, not just the top of the tooth where you may have noticed the damage. So, replacing a tooth is not strictly “replacing the tooth”. It is more so about preserving the underlying bone so it will not negatively affect the surrounding teeth, your gum health, or overall oral health.

Can everyone get dental implants?

Whilst getting dental implants for most people shows no issue there are still some things you have to have to be a suitable candidate. For example, patients with chronic illnesses such as diabetes or heart conditions may not qualify as good candidates for the operation, as it is best the gum and jawbone are strong and healthy. Any concerns or medical history will be discussed during an initial consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

After dental implant surgery, a soft food diet is recommended for the first few days to allow for proper healing. Harder foods can gradually be reintroduced as the healing process progresses, but it's important to avoid biting or chewing directly on the implant site until it has fully healed, which can take several months. Good oral hygiene habits should also be maintained during the healing process.

Dental implant surgery is typically performed using local anaesthesia to numb the area, so the procedure itself should not be painful. Patients may feel some pressure or discomfort during the procedure, but it should not be painful. After the procedure, patients may experience some soreness and swelling, but this can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medication and should subside within a few days.

If a patient experiences severe pain or discomfort after dental implant surgery, they should contact their dentist or oral surgeon for further evaluation, as this may be a sign of an infection or other complication.

Overall, whilst there may be some discomfort associated with the dental implant procedure, most patients find that the benefits of having a stable and durable replacement tooth or teeth far outweigh any temporary discomfort or inconvenience.
