Check-Up and Clean

Keep your smile in optimal health with regular check-up and cleans.

The team at The Smile Speciality Dental Group recommends visiting our clinic for regular check-up and cleans every six months. Our check-ups will involve the patient undergoing a comprehensive examination of their teeth and gums as well as a thorough clean. One of our dental professionals attending your appointment will also advise you of how to better improve your oral health at home to prevent unwanted dental issues or cosmetic concerns from arising.

What happens during a dental visit?

A dental check-up in our clinic will usually be completed in two parts which includes your thorough oral health examination and then a professional clean. These two components of your check-up and clean are both critical in helping you maintain and improve your oral health. During your check-up, we will thoroughly examine your mouth and check for any signs of gum disease, cavities and decay as well cleaning up any build-up of plaque.

If the dental appointment is for a young child, ensure you start bringing them into see the dentist as soon as their first tooth has erupted. Seeing a dentist early can encourage seeing the dentist later in life, discourage any fear of the dentist and, of course, assist with compliance which could prevent further complications. What causes tooth decay?

Tooth decay can be caused by numerous lifestyle choices. While there are treatment solutions if you do experience tooth decay, it is best to avoid it where possible as if the plaque is not removed, it may harden into tartar. Tartar gives plaque an easier surface to adhere to and can cause teeth to look off-colour as it is porous and absorbs stains more easily. Unfortunately, it can only be removed by a professional dentist during the appointment.

What are foods that can cause tooth decay?

A large number of factors can influence tooth decay. Some common food and drinks that can encourage decay include:

  • Sugary substances including sweets, soft drinks, etc.
  • Acidic foods including citrus fruits, juices or other drinks
  • Highly processed foods including biscuits, cereals, jams, etc.

Consequently, plaque is made up of acids that can destroy your enamel. If you consume foods with a large amount of sugar or acidity in them, you are encouraging plaque build-up.

Don’t be fooled, however, tooth decay is not just a result of your diet; it can also be caused by misaligned teeth, improper brushing or poor oral hygiene in general can all factor into the situation.
