What can you do for missing teeth?

What can you do for missing teeth?

Missing teeth can be replaced with dental implants, dentures or bridges.

We all want beautiful and healthy smiles, but unfortunately a number of issues can lead to tooth loss. Oral health problems, such as deep tooth decay, gum disease and injuries, can all cause severe damage if left untreated, and can result in the need for an extraction. The good news, however, is that there are a number of solutions to missing teeth, all of which have their own set of benefits. Read on to find out what the options are, and which one is most suitable for you if you would like to restore your smile…

Dental implants are a permanent solution

Dental implants are a popular restorative treatment and can be used to replace one or multiple teeth. During dental implant surgery, your dentist will place a titanium implant directly into your jawbone. An artificial tooth is then attached to the implant to achieve a natural-looking aesthetic, as well as fully restored oral function. Dental implants are made from very durable materials and are made to last for many years provided they are properly taken care of.

Dental bridges can replace multiple teeth

A dental bridge is another effective solution for tooth loss. They are often recommended in cases where multiple teeth have been lost or extracted in the same area of the mouth. A dental bridge works by bridging a gap with the use of prosthetic teeth. The prosthetic is attached to the adjacent remaining teeth and fixed in place with a special dental cement. Dental bridges achieve a natural-looking appearance and can considerably improve the overall look of one’s smile because they fill gaps left by missing teeth.

Dentures restore function

If you are missing all of your natural teeth, you may be a suitable candidate for complete dentures. If, however, you have some healthy, natural teeth remaining, partial dentures may be an appropriate option for you. Removable dentures comprise natural-looking artificial teeth, which are attached to a pink base that matches the colour of your gums. Although it can take some time to adjust to the feeling of dentures, they are generally very comfortable and help to effectively restore oral functions like biting, chewing and speaking.

Why replace missing teeth?

Besides the cosmetic advantages, there are also a number of health benefits to replacing missing teeth. Having a gap in your mouth as a result of a missing tooth can have a detrimental impact on your ability to eat and speak properly. Missing teeth can make it difficult to chew, and also cause discomfort when eating. Tooth loss can also affect the muscles in your face and jaw, and even cause changes to the structure of your face over time. For these reasons, it is advisable to have missing teeth replaced for the sake of your overall health, as well as your appearance.
